Study shows mothers who got influenza during pregnancy more likely to develop bipolar disorder

The study published in JAMA Psychiatry on May 8, 2013 found that children whose mothers contracted influenza (flu) during pregnancy had a four-fold increase in the risk of bipolar disorder.

The risk was high if the mother had the flu at any time during the pregnancy.

The recommendation was to vaccinate all pregnant women against the flu and to advise them to avoid contact with people who are symptomatic.
